STUDY GROUP QUESTIONS

1. What is your job? Describe what kind of work you do.

I am an apprentice hairdresser and I am usually helping my supervisor who is a 17 year experienced senior hairdresser. I just started a new career as a hairdresser last year since the coronavirus outbreak. Assisting my supervisor and organizing the shop is my main job. Mostly I sweep the floor, answer the phone and finish clients' hair. I sometimes have an appointment for my own customers. Blow Dry after hair wash, coloring hair such as doing regrowth, changing hair color all over, and cutting hair. I just started cutting hair this month.

Most clients require hair wash, haircut and color, this is the main set of services sold at the hair salon I work for.

I am doing an apprenticeship course which means I learn skills at work and complete training modules from school simultaneously to gain full qualification which is called certificate 3 in hairdressing. I can also be qualified with an apprenticeship certificate too. I am doing this not only for qualification but also for having new and good experience and learning the local way.

2. Describe how your job is different from what you had expected.

I already expected it would be physically demanding though, it was harder than I expected at the beginning.

It also requires good communication skills since we need to figure out the client's needs in detail, and of course every single word should be in English since I live in Australia. Even if you can learn hairdressing skills really fast, you might struggle with communication skills and hospitality skills. I would say that the skill requirement is not everything, there is as much if not more focus being a business and providing a customer experience and great service.

Learning more than just haircutting, I have learnt other critical aspects of running a hair salon that I was not too aware of.

3. How is an engineer’s job different from a marketing job or accounting job?

My partner is an engineer and he wrote down this for me with great passion. Professional engineers are expected to be able to review and forecast costs and monitor spending as an accountant would. Engineers deal with many different aspects of many different careers, this is why they are highly sought after. Marketing roles generally rely more on the speculative perception of humans which is the exact opposite to what an engineer or an accountant relies on. Engineering, Marketing or Accounting all revolve around the same outcome which is making money.
