STUDY GROUP QUESTIONS

 

1. Who is your favorite athlete? What do you admire about them?

 

I don't really know many athletes but my favorite athlete is Yuna Kim, who is a retired South Korean competitive figure skater. She is just amazing. I guess almost all Koreans love her since she won the gold medal as the 2010 Olympic champion. She is really great at what she's doing, strong, smart and beautiful. She is literally perfect.

 

2. Think of some ways to honor great people in fields other than professional sports.

 

To pay tribute to athletes, there is a custom of retiring uniform numbers. On April 15, 1997, every team in MLB retired No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. Out of respect for him, the MLB decided to retire his number.

There are also some other ways to honor great people in other fields. The Nobel Prize would be an example of a way to tribute. Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. I guess these kinds of prizes and ceremonies are great ways to honor great people so that we remember their milestones for a long time even after they call it a career or pass away.

 

3. Who, in your opinion, is an underrated athlete? Why do you think they are underrated?

 

I have no idea at all about this area since I am not even a little fan of sports. So I had to google to find some information about this. Stan Musial, 20-time All-Star, three-time National League MVP, fourth on the all-time MLB hit list, Hall of Fame, could be the most underrated athlete. Musial didn't play for New York or Boston teams, so he wasn't romanticized by the hopelessly provincial baseball poets who transformed Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio into gods and Musial wasn't a controversial figure. He just played the game.
