4 N을/를 위해(서), V-기 위해(서)

건강을 위해서 매일 비타민을 먹고 있습니다.

I take vitamins daily for my health.

 

군인은 나라를 위해서 일하는 사람입니다.

Soldiers are people who work for their country.

 

훌륭한 스케이트 선수가 되기 위해 열심히 연습을 합니다.

I practice hard to become a great skater.

** Grammar Focus

 

This pattern is used when performing an action for the sake of something or to accomplish something.

Specifically, it indicates the speaker will do what is stated in the second clause for the sake of what is stated in the first clause. In the case of a noun being the reason for the action 을/를 위해서 is used.

위해서 is the shortened form of 위하여서.

Further, 서 can also be omitted, leaving 위해.

It corresponds to ‘for the sake of or (in order) to' in English.

When used with a verb, -기 위해서 is added to the verb stem.

 

-Noun + 을/를 위해서

 

Word Ending in Vowel

나라 + 를 위해서 → 나라를 위해서

 

Word Ending in Consonant

가족 + 을 위해서 → 가족을 위해서

 

-Verb Stem + -기 위해서

가다 + -기 위해서

→ 가기 위해서

-기 위해서 cannot be added directly to adjectives.

However, if -아/어지다 has been added to an adjective, making it a verb, then it can be used with - 기 위해서.

 

• 건강하기 위해서 운동을 합니다. (X)

→ 건강해지기 위해서 운동을 합니다. (O)

• 대학교에 입학하려고 열심히 공부합시다. (X)

Can be used with -아/어야 해요, -(으)ㅂ시다, -(으)세요, and -(으)ㄹ까요?
