** Grammar Focus

 

This pattern expresses whether one knows how, or has the ability, to do something.

When the verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, -ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 is used, and when the verb stem ends in a consonant, -을 줄 알다/모르다 is used.

It corresponds to ‘know how to/doesn't know how to' in English.

보내다 + -ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 → 보낼 줄 알다/모르다

입다 + 을 줄 알다/모르다 → 입을 줄 알다/모르다

*-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다

 

Expresses whether one knows how or has the ability to do something.

 

• 나는 딸기잼을 만들 줄 몰라요.

I don't know how to make strawberry jam.

 

*-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다

 

Used not only to express the ability to do something but also whether a situation permits something to be done.

 

• 나는 딸기잼을 만들 수 없어요.

(1) I don't know how to make strawberry jam.

(2) I know how to make strawberry jam, but for some reason (such as a lack of strawberries.) I can't make it right now.
