Noun (명사) 마다

웨슬리 씨는 일요일마다 교회에 가요.
Wesley goes to church every Sunday.

기차는 한 시간마다 있어요.
The train comes once every hour.

나라마다 국기가 달라요.
Every country has a different flag.

** Grammar Focus

1. 마다 is added to time nouns.
마다 expresses the repetition of the same or a similar situation or behavior over a set period of time.
It corresponds to 'every' or 'once every' in English.

두 달마다 머리를 잘라요.
I cut my hair (once) every two months.

오 분마다 지하철이 와요.
The subway train comes (once) every five minutes.

2. 마다 can also indicate all, or every one, of something, with no exceptions.
In this sense, it corresponds to 'every' or "all' in English.
마다 is added to the noun being described.

주말마다 여행을 가요.
I take a trip every weekend.

점심시간에는 식당마다 자리가 없어요.
During lunchtime, all the cafeterias become full (have no seats available).

1. The phrases and 날마다, 일주일마다, 달마다, and 해마다 can also be written as 매일, 매주, 매월/매달, and 매년.

날마다 회사에 가요. = 매일 회사에 가요.
I go to work (at the company) daily. = I go to work (at the company) every day.

일주일마다 회의가 있어요. = 매주 회의가 있어요.
We have a meeting weekly. = We have a meeting every week.

달마다 잡지가 나와요. = 매월/매달 잡지가 나와요.
The magazine is published monthly. = The magazine is published every month.

해마다 이사해요. = 매년 이사해요.
I move (change residences) once a year. = I move every year.

2. In the case of the word 집, 집집마다 is used instead of 집마다.

요즘에는 집집마다 인터넷을 사용해요.
These days, all households use the Internet.
