01 Word Negation

한국 사람이에요.
She is Korean.
한국 사람이 아니에요.
She is not Korean.

돈이 있어요.
I have money.
돈이 없어요.
I don't have any money.

 

** Grammar Focus

Negative sentences can be made either by negating the entire sentence or by negating a word.
When making a negative sentence by negating a word,
이다 is changed to 아니다,
있다 is changed to 없다,
and 알다 is changed to 모르다.

Of these, 아니다 is written in the form 이/가 아니다, but when used in the spoken form, 이/가 is often omitted.

Formal Polite Style - Informal Polite Style
아니다 - 이다 : 아닙니다 - 아니에요
없다 - 있다 : 없습니다 - 없어요
모르다 - 알다 : 모릅니다 - 몰라요

 

** In Conversation

민우 씨는 학생이에요?
Is Minu a student?
아니요, 학생이 아니에요. 선생님이에요.
(= 아니요, 학생이 아니라 선생님이에요.)
No, he's not a student. He's a teacher.

오늘 시간 있어요?
Do you have some time today?
아니요, 오늘 시간 없어요. 바빠요.
No, I don't have any time today. I'm busy.

일본어를 알아요?
Do you know Japanese?
아니요, 몰라요.
No, I don't know Japanese.
