1 ‘ㅡ’ 불규칙  (Irregular Conjugation)

 

민우 씨는 요즘 많이 바빠요.

Minu is really busy these days.

 

불 좀 꺼 주세요.

Please turn off the lights.

 

배가 고파요.

** Grammar Focus

 

For verb and adjective stems that end in, is omitted without exception when adding an ending that begins with 아/어. Then, the vowel that preceded determines whether 아 or 어 is used in the ending. That is, when the vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, ㅏ is used, otherwise is used. In the case of single-syllable stems in which ㅡ is the only vowel, ㅓ is added after is omitted.

 

바쁘다+아요→ 바빠요.

(ㅏ is the vowel preceding ㅡ, so therefore -아요 is added.)

예쁘다 +-어서 → 예뻐서

(ㅖ is the vowel preceding ㅡ, so therefore -어서 is added.)

크다 + 었어요 → 컸어요

(The stem is a single syllable, so therefore -었어요 is added.)

A 하미 씨, 지금 울어요?

A Hami, are you crying?

B 네, 영화가 너무 슬퍼서 울고 있어요.

B Yes, I'm crying because the movie was so sad.

 

A 주말에 소풍 잘 갔다 왔어요?

B 아니요, 날씨가 나빠서 소풍을 못 갔어요.

B No, the weather was bad, so I couldn't go.

 

A 어제 왜 학교에 안 왔어요?

A Why didn't you come to school yesterday?
