Verb (동사) -(으)면서

밥을 먹으면서 TV를 봅니다.
I eat while watching TV.

우리 언니는 피아노를 치면서 노래를 해요.
My/our older sister sings while she plays the piano.

운전하면서 전화하지 마세요. 위험해요.
Don't use the phone while driving. It's dangerous.

** Grammar Focus

-(으)면서 indicates that the actions of the first and second verbs occur simultaneously.
It means 'while' in English.
When the verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, -면서 is used, and when it ends in a consonant, -으면서 is used.

가다 + -면서 -> 가면서

먹다 + -으면서 -> 먹으면서

The subjects of both clauses are the same.
That is, they must be the same person.

하영 씨는 노래를 하면서 재준 씨는 피아노를 칩니다 (X)
-> (하영 씨는) 노래를 하면서 (하영 씨는) 피아노를 칩니다. (O)
(Hayeong) plays the piano while she (Hayeong) sings.
-> 하영 씨가 노래를 하는 동안 재준 씨는 피아노를 칩니다. (O)
While Hayeong sings, Jaejun plays the piano.

When the subjects of the two verbs are different, -는 동안 is used.

동생이 청소를 하는 동안 언니는 빨래를 했습니다.
While my little brother/sister was cleaning the house, my older sister did the laundry.

Past and future tense endings are no added to the verb preceding -(으)면서.
It is always written in the present tense.

어제 하영 씨는 노래를 했으면서 피아노를 쳤습니다. (X)
-> 어제 하영 씨는 노래를 하면서 피아노를 쳤습니다. (O)
Yesterday, Hayeong sang while she played the piano.

A 음악을 좋아해요?
A Do you like music?
B 네, 그래서 음악을 들으면서 공부를 해요.
B Yes, that's why I listen to music while I study.

A 어제 많이 바빴어요?
A Were you very busy yesterday?
B 네, 그래서 샌드위치를 먹으면서 일했어요.
B Yes, that's why I ate a sandwich while working.

A 요즘 왜 피곤해요?
A Why are you tired these days?
B 학교에 다니면서 아르바이트를 해요. 그래서 피곤해요.
B I have a part-time job while attending school. That's why I'm tired.
